Answers to common questions about our research
Beyond the Record is a concierge genealogical research service for individuals and families of Italian descent. We specialize in comprehensive, multigenerational reconstructions. Using an Anthropological Genealogical approach, we go beyond names and dates to uncover the context that made your ancestors' lives unique.
Feasibility Research is the first step of every project we undertake. It is an initial screening of sources and archives to determine whether enough records are available to support the research. If the records turn out to be inadequate, we will discuss with you how best to move forward.
A professionally written hardcover report with a narrative of significant aspects of your family's history. It includes detailed family trees and genealogical charts, copies or extracts of relevant records, historical and geographical context with maps and images when available, and complete source citations.
Genealogical research depends on the records that were created, preserved, and made accessible, and some may be incomplete, restricted, damaged, or lost. We pursue all productive research paths reasonably available, clearly identify evidentiary limitations, and distinguish documented conclusions from informed possibilities.
Yes. With part of our team based in Italy, we can consult physical archives and repositories in person when a project requires it. Our main focus, however, remains remote research, using digitized civil, ecclesiastical, census, immigration, military, and other records held by repositories in Italy and the United States. In-person research is always agreed upon separately and never undertaken without your prior written consent.
Yes. Beyond our genealogical research projects, we can take on more specific requests in Italy, such as locating an ancestor's grave in a particular cemetery or photographing the house, street, or village where your grandparents lived. These tasks fall outside our standard research plan, so we define each one with you individually.
Yes. If your interests are more focused than our comprehensive research, reach out and tell us what you hope to accomplish. We will schedule a complimentary consultation to see if we are a good fit and define the scope of services together.
We can trace your lineal descent back to your last Italian-born ancestor and document each generation's citizenship status. Should you be eligible, we provide the records your legal counsel will need to assess your case. Since Law 74/2025 significantly narrowed eligibility, your eligibility should be assessed by a qualified legal professional.
